Expansion packs til Red Dead Redemptions kommer snart
Western-spillet Red Dead Redemption fra Rockstar er blevet et hit og er et af mest solgte spil i øjeblikket. Historien om den hårdkogte cowboy, John Marston, som forsøger at komme ud af det kriminelle spor, er gået rent ind hos gamere, som både kommer til at opleve skuddueller og ride rundt på prærien.

It’s a simple fact that the world is not exactly brimming with great video game Westerns. If you like your war movies and Tom Clancy thrillers, you’re pretty well covered. Likewise if you want the video-game equivalents of space operas, serial killer thrillers, post-apocalyptic dramas, horror movies, action movies, fantasy sagas, crime thrillers, swords and sandals epics and CGI family flicks. But Westerns? Nope.
Maybe the dwindling popularity of the cinematic and literary Western is to blame, but it’s a shame that a genre so rich in atmosphere, violence and drama has only inspired the likes of Desperadoes, Mad Dog McCree, Outlaws, Gun and Call of Juarez. These aren’t necessarily bad games, but the Western has never brought us something of the calibre of Bioshock, Oblivion or Mass Effect 2. Or at least it hadn’t until now.

Skift harddisk i din PS3
Jeg faldt over denne video på YouTube.com der viser, ganske simpelt, hvor enkelt det er at skifte harddisk i Playstation 3 (ps3) Husk dog at harddisken skal være 2,5", med SATA interface, og helst ikke hurtigere end 5400RPM, da 7200RPM diske udvikler en smule mere varme og bruger mere strøm.

I’m a big fan of the survival horror genre. Ever since I first loaded Alone in the Dark onto my 486 PC from multiple floppy disks I’ve been hooked. Since then there have been some real highlights such as Silent Hill 2 on the original Xbox and the truly superb Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube. And then there’s the Fatal Frame series that relied heavily on spooky atmosphere rather than action and gore. All that said, it has been quite a while since there’s been a great survival horror game that wasn’t part of an existing series – okay, Dead Space was good, but its spaceship locale and alien bad guys made it feel more like the thinking man’s Doom.
All that is about to change though with the impending release of Alan Wake on the Xbox 360. Not only is Alan Wake a completely new entry to the survival horror genre, it’s a game with such a strong pedigree that it has got gamers waiting with baited breath for its release, myself included. For those of you who don’t know (there may be one or two of you), the team behind Alan Wake previously brought us Max Payne, so there is a heavy weight of expectation associated with the new game and its titular protagonist.

I might as well just come out and say it: the sequel isn’t as good. But how could it be? BioShock excelled because it took us somewhere we had never been, delivering some of us one of the most richly atmospheric, emotional experiences we’ve ever had from a video game. It was only logical that BioShock 2 would return to the undersea city of Rapture; to its magnificent, rusted art-deco style and the lunatic antics of its vicious, gene-splicing population, but it’s left its new developers with an uphill struggle. How do you shock, horrify and amaze an audience with something that has already shocked, horrified and amazed them before? Worse, how do you add to a storyline which the first game pretty much completed? With Ryan and Fontaine dead and Rapture at the point of total collapse, what exactly has the city left to offer us to justify a second visit?
The answer is: a new story, a new nemesis, some intelligent new game mechanics and an experience that – in the end – still manages to affect you in a way that few other games can manage. The only thing you need to understand is that not all of this will be apparent within the first few hours. To get the most from BioShock 2 you’ll need to have a little faith.
Let’s start with what’s changed. As you probably know, BioShock 2 puts you in the hefty steel boots of one of the very first Big Daddies. Some ten years before the fall of Rapture you’re, apparently, slain with your Little Sister charge taken away from you. Now, with Ryan killed and Rapture society in the midst of a final breakdown, you awaken once more. Armed with a huge drill and whatever weapons and plasmids you can carry, it’s up to you to find your Little Sister once again and ensure that no harm befalls her.

Enjoyed Mass Effect? Played it to the end? Well, chances are that you’ve bought Mass Effect 2 already. By now you’re fully aware that the sequel is an exceptional effort, improving on the original and staking a claim as one of the finest games on the 360. Don’t let us keep you, get back to it right now. Already completed it? Why not start another character and have another go? Go on, you know you want to.
Still here? Well, either you never played Mass Effect or you were one of those people who didn’t want to stick it out until the end. You probably need a little more convincing. Here we go. Mass Effect 2 takes everything that was good about the original, fixes nearly everything that was bad, and delivers a compulsive sci-fi adventure that will a) make you wish you’d finished Mass Effect and b) leave you longing for a third episode. Some of these changes are almost calculated to annoy the RPG hardcore, but the overall result is to make a Mass Effect with even greater mass appeal.
You see, if Mass Effect had Bioware experimenting with the action/RPG hybrid, then Mass Effect 2 is the next logical step down that road. While there are still traditional Bioware RPG mechanics in place – character progression, psionic powers, a party to manage, the ability to pause combat to trigger abilities, etc. – there’s no need to feel bogged down in them. Thanks to a range of player aids and automated systems, it’s perfectly possible to start Mass Effect 2 as a Soldier class character and enjoy it as a fairly straight third-person shooter with interactive cut-scenes. That’s right. If you’d rather play Gears of War than Fallout 3, you’ll still have a whale of a time.

Once again it’s that time of year when all right-minded souls ponder one of life’s biggest questions: which of the recent crop of games will do the best job of banishing the Boxing Day blues and take us partying through to New Years Eve. The likes of Forza 3, Dragon Age and Modern Warfare 2 will do the job, but you can’t really disappear for hours at a time when family or friends come around. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, not make like Billy no-mates. Wii Sports Resort is a contender, but then most of us over-did that in the summer.
Not everyone has the voice for Singstar, the knowledge for Buzz or Scene It!, or the sheer nerve and patience for New Super Mario Bros Wii. No, to my mind this year’s best recipe for glad times with kith and kin is Lego Rock Band. While it has at least two huge, whopping flaws, it’s hard to think of a game better suited to Boxing Day action, or an audience that might take in anyone from kids to mates to parents, grandparents and in-laws.

Hands up. I confess. In retrospect, like a lot of people, I probably over-rated The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass. It was so great to see a proper Zelda game running on a handheld system, and so easy to be bowled over by the game’s sublime use of the DS hardware, that I was prepared to gloss over some of the details that – in the end – dragged the game back from greatness. I might have turned a blind eye to the limitations of the games world, to the lack of excitement in its oceans, and toned down my darker thoughts on the hideous frustrations of The Ocean God’s Temple. Don’t get me wrong: I still think it’s a brilliant DS game. But classic Zelda? No. Not quite.

Review: Assassin’s Creed II

There was one gap in the original Assassin’s Creed that its free-running hero could never make it over: the gap between our expectations and the reality of the game. It’s hard to remember after such a savage backlash, but some aspects of the game were magnificent. The visuals? Undeniably stunning. The recreation of the Holy Land, and of the architecture of Jerusalem and Acre? Incredible. The environment-sensitive, realistic animation? Only bettered by Uncharted and its sequel.
And while not everyone liked the controls – the game practically plays itself is one complaint I’ve heard – they certainly produced a fluid experience of climbing and free-running that made clambering up walls and towers a pleasure, not a chore. Having spent some time this week playing Pandemic’s dumb but fun The Saboteur, I can’t tell you how much Altair’s swift, easy climbing and jumping is missed when it’s not there.
